ASTM Meeting in Atlanta

We held our meeting on Monday in Atlanta. Here is an update on progress from the E20.02 subcommittee on Radiation Thermometry.

WK21204 - Standard Guide for the Selection and Use of Wideband, Low-temperature Infrared Thermometers

This work item was completed and put up for ballot in September. There was one negative. The reason for the negative will be corrected. Then the work item will be balloted to the subcommittee prior to December 15. This way we will be ready to ballot to the main committee in time for our meeting in May.

E 1256 – 95: Standard Test Method for Radiation Thermometers (Single Waveband Type)

The figures have been updated in this standard. They will be put to ballot shortly.

A second item that will be taken care of is standardizing terminology in this standard with the terminology in IEC standards. Work on this will begin mid-February.

Proposed Work Item - Calibration of Wide-band, Low Temperature Infrared Thermometers

This work item will be submitted at the beginning of January. It will use parts of a BIPM standard and part of a technical guide for the uncertainty portion of this standard.

WK21204 Back from Ballot

WK21204 went through subcommittee ballot this past month. Results were 6 affirmative, 1 negative and 6 abstention. After talking to the one negative voter, it was agreed that the negative will be withdrawn if the suggested changes are made.

There was one abstention with comment that will be discussed at length at the November subcommittee meeting in Atlanta. The rest of the comments will be part of the discussion as well.

Updating E1256

I would like to have input on E20.02’s current standard, E1256 Standard Test Methods for Radiation Thermometers. I would like to have some feedback to the following questions.
Do you use E1256?
What parts of E1256 do you use?
What should be added to E1256?
What should be taken away from E1256?
What should be changed in E1256?Please provide feedback before October 15, 2009. We should strive to keep this standard up-to-date and usable for users of radiation thermometers.

WK21204 Goes to Subcommittee Ballot

The proposed guide, WK21204 - Standard Guide for the Selection and Use of Wide-band, Low-temperature Infrared Thermometers, has been sent out for subcommittee ballot. I would like to thank all who have helped to get this work item to this point. If you are a voting member, please cast your vote before October 15, 2009.

WK21204 - Standard Guide for the Selection and Use of Wide-band, Low Temperature Infrared Thermometers

A draft has been sent out to six committee members for review. Feedback is due by 9/3/09. At that point it will be decided if the item is ready for ballot.

WK21204 - Standard Guide for the Selection and Use of Wide-band, Low Temperature Infrared Thermometers

To this date 90% of the work item has been put into the ASTM standards template. It should be ready for its first review by the task group around 7/2.

E20.02 Progress through 5/21

We held our E20.02 meeting in Vancouver this past Monday. I lead the meeting via Web-Ex from American Fork, Utah. It went rather well. Here is an update on our subcommittee's progress.

WK21204 - Standard Guide for the Selection and Use of Wide-band, Low Temperature Infrared Thermometers

The rough draft for this guide is complete. The following steps will take place between now and the next subcommittee meeting in November.
  • The current text will be put into ‘standards form’ (June 09)
  • Technical review (July 09)
  • Editorial review (July 09)
  • Send out for ballot (September 09)

The date of September 09 to send out for ballot is a stretch goal. It will only take place if a significant amount of editing does not need to take place after the reviews.

Calibration of Wide-band, Low Temperature Infrared Thermometers

This will be a work item that we will start on in November.

E 1256 – 95: Standard Test Method for Radiation Thermometers (Single Waveband Type)

This standard does not come up to be reapproved until 2012. However, we need to review it to see if we can make some changes. I will be discussing this with Ray Peacock in the future.

Collaboration Areas

ASTM has started collaboration areas for current work items. I have started one for WK21204. If you are interested in collaborating in the development of this standard, please contact me.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on Monday Nov. 9th, 2009 or Tuesday Nov. 10th, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia.
